Up until the mid 20th Century, Europe had been the art center of the world producing the highest quality of work and the majority of what we consider the masters such as Michelangelo and Picasso. It was recognized as the place to go for both serious study of art history and art instruction and many collectors flocked there every year to augment their collections. Although Europe still continues to enjoy these laurels events such as the two World Wars and the prosperity of the "new" nation it now shares these distinctions with the United States.
