Outsider Art also called Visionary Art is one of the most sought after types art right now. There is no defining style or type but generally speaking it is usually created by someone who has no formal art training and is outside of the mainstream art world (in many cases, the more outside the better). The term was first used by art critic Roger Cardinal in the 1970's as a synonym for the European term "Art Brut" or "Raw Art" which was originally used in Europe to refer to art that was created by insane asylum inmates. In the U.S. the term Outsider art refers to a much broader spectrum of art and artists that may include folk, visionary, naïve and more and is usually created by someone who is self-taught and often uses unconventional material and ideas. |
